Assist Dyslexia started this service in late May to enable parents outside our catchment area to avail of support for Dyslexic children. To date we have met with families from Donegal, Cork, Clare, Meath and Wexford. The initial response has been good and these families are now teaching their children at home. It will take a couple of months to ascertain the success of the service but parents have undertaken to let us know the results after 10-12 weeks.
HOW DOES THIS SERVICE WORK?
A tutor from Assist Dyslexia meets with parents at a pre-arranged venue. So far meetings have been held in Mullingar, Kinnegad and Bundoran. The tutor explains Dyslexia and shows the parent how to use a multi-sensory tuition programme at home. They are given a pack of resources and they follow the guidelines given by the tutor when working at home with the children. At the end of 10-12 sessions, an assessment will show if progress has been made. But feedback has been positive with progress being noted four to five weeks.
We hope that when parents complete the programme, they will put a review on our Facebook page. This is an important service as many parents have reported no trained Dyslexia tutors in their area. Also, one mother pointed out she already knows far more about how her child learns since the programme.
